Twenty-one accident-prone zones identified around Tiruchi

In a city that has witnessed a spurt in vehicular density over the recent past , the police have identified 21 spots as “accident-prone.” The spots include Karumandapam Road, K.K. Nagar to New Madurai Bypass, Chennai Bypass-‘Y’ Road Junction, Chennai Bypass, Prabhat Junction to Marakkadai, Tiruvanaikoil Trunk Road, Ponmalai ‘G’ Corner and Anna statue to Cauvery bridge.
Police sources said spots with at least four fatal accidents are classified as accident-prone.
The stretch from zonal point to check post – 1 along the Tiruchi-Dindigul Road tops the list of fatal accidents reported till October this year, with eight fatalities.
Fatal cases were also reported in the stretches from check post – 1 to Ramji Nagar, Mannarpuram – New Madurai Bypass, Jail Corner – Airport, Palpannai –SIT, Anna statue to Cauvery Bridge and Vayalur Road.
Of the 107 fatal accidents reported up to October this year, 17 happened between noon and 2 p.m.; 12 accidents between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. and 14 between 8 p.m. and 10 p.m., according to Road Accident Data Management System of the City Police.

Police sources say the number of fatal cases (107) and casualty figures (113) this year are less when compared with 2012 figures that stood at 147 and 150 respectively.
Caution lights have been installed at five junctions.
Following recurring accidents near Eraniyamman Temple along the Chennai Bypass, barricades have been placed in a zigzag manner to reduce the speed of vehicles. No accident has been reported at the spot for one-and-a-half months now after the barricades were installed, say the police. Road safety campaigns involving students and traffic police have had a positive effect on motorists.
