Trichy corporation begins Aadhaar card camps in 60 wards

The city corporation has begun its Adhaar card registration camps in its limit from October 3. In the first two days of the camp, the corporation recorded the identity of 1125 people. This action of corporation has come at a time when the central government is yet to issue the Adhaar cards for those who had already applied it.

As an intermediate arrangement before the commencement of phase-II Adhaar card camp, the Trichy corporation has started the camps in the three zonal offices including Srirangam, Ariyamangalam and Ponmalai. The people in first 60 wards of the 65-ward Trichy corporation can make use of the camps that will be conducted until further orders are issued. In Trichy corporation, 7,92,253 people above the age of five had to register for Adhaar card. But as of April 1, when the first phase of the camps was over, the corporation registered 5,88,718 people. "In each centre, two units will be available to capture the identity of the people. In order to clear the rush, we have planned to register 150 candidates per day in each centre. It is an intermediate arrangement made by the corporation before the commencement of the full-fledged second phase as people were in a hurry to get them registered. At present, the second phase has been going on in rural areas. The date for the second phase is yet to be announced. During the second phase, we would cover more candidates per day," VP Thandapani, commissioner of Trichy corporation told TOI.

Meanwhile, the delay in getting the Adhaar cards from the central government has worried people because they could not link their Adhaar number to get the subsidy on LPG. Now-a-days, the people who want to book LPG cylinders have to provide their Adhaar numbers.

So, the unregistered people are queuing up at the Adhaar camps. Nevertheless, they could not get the card immediately. But after receiving an SMS from the Adhaar card distribution agencies, they can download it from the internet at the cost of Rs40 per print out in net cafes.
