Sites identified for RTO building in Srirangam

The Transport Department has narrowed down on few sites within the city for construction of own building to house the Srirangam Regional Transport Office (RTO).
The identified sites belonging to the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department at Kondayampettai and Y corner areas near Thiruvanaikoil were inspected by the Transport Commissioner T. Prabhakara Rao accompanied by officials of the Transport Department here on Wednesday.
Mr. Prabhakara Rao who later held a meeting with the Regional Transport Officers of Tiruchi, Perambalur, Srirangam, Karur and Ariyalur at the office of the Deputy Transport Commissioner here, reviewed the revenue collection of each RTO and the status of the licences issued.
Officials say the Transport Commissioner would finalise the suitable site for construction of own building for the Srirangam RTO that issues 30 fresh driving licences and 40 to 50 LLRs (Learner’s Licence) on an average every day. Ever since the Srirangam RTO was established 12 years ago, it has been functioning in a rented building.
The State government has already sanctioned funds to the tune of Rs.2 crore for construction of an own building and sites identified accordingly, say the department officials here.
Presently, the Srirangam RTO has under its jurisdiction a unit office at Thuraiyur and would soon have under its control a new unit office at Musiri which has been sanctioned by the State government.
Officials say the non-transport vehicle population such as two-wheelers and cars meant for personal use within Srirangam RTO limits was about 2 lakh, while the figures with respect to commercial transport vehicles, including autos and lorries were 10,000.
The department has identified a rented building to house the new unit office at Musiri which would serve the needs of the public of Musiri and Thottiyam taluks. The new office is expected to function from this month end. The number of unit offices in the district will increase to four once the Musiri unit office starts functioning. The other three unit offices are already functioning at Tiruverumbur, Manapparai and Thuraiyur.
