12 sponsors to maintain traffic islands, roundabouts
Twelve sponsors have been identified for taking up
beautification and maintenance of 10 roundabouts and 18 traffic islands
in the city. Disclosing this at a consultative meeting with the sponsors
to discuss the works on Saturday, Corporation Commissioner
V.P.Thandapani said the Collector has recently granted permission to the
12 institutions as part of the city beautification programme.
The
sanction comes after two rounds of meetings with sponsors held over the
past few months under chairmanship of N.R.Sivapathi, Minister for
School Education, Law, Youth Welfare and Sports. A committee was formed
under the Collector to oversee the works. A group of sponsors including
banks, business houses and other private agencies had come forward to
take up the works. The Corporation had already finalised the designs for
the beautification works.
The Commissioner
instructed the sponsors to begin work this month and complete the works
by January. He urged them to conform to guidelines given in development
of roundabout and traffic islands. Apart from greening and landscaping,
the sponsors should install solar lamps at identified places.
Mr.Thandapani also called upon the committee constituted to maintain
statues in the city to ensure that the structures were maintained. City
engineer S.Raja Mohamed, executive engineers R.Chandran and
S.Arunachalam, were present.
