Fun on wheels for tourists soon in Tirhcy

With the state government planning to introduce open-deck buses, tourists will soon get a “top view” of Tamil Nadu.

The tourism department has proposed to run the buses in Chennai, Madurai and
Tiruchy. “These destinations receive thousands of visitors every day. To facilitate a better view of the varied attractions in these cities, chief minister J. Jayalalithaa has ordered introduction of open-deck buses,” tourism minister S. Gokula Indira told the Assembly Wednesday.
The low-floor environment-friendly buses will be similar to those used for sightseeing in London.

The facility is available in neighbouring Andhra Pradesh, where the buses are used for tours to the historic Charminar.

“This will be a double-decker bus. Tourists would be seated on the top floor without a roof and enjoy aerial view of sites,” a senior tourism official said.

He said the
modalities to operate the buses would be worked out soon and the tours would be held mostly in the evenings.
