BHEL Trichy expects 30% increase in turnover

BHEL, Trichy plans to create additional facilities through Railways and the new Karaikal port for speedy transportation of energy equipment and boiler components this year in view of the cost advantage and the difficulties in getting truck trailers for movement via roads. This approach is also in tune with its plan to have uniform production throughout the year instead of rushing it in the last quarter.

ED, A V Krishnan said in Chennai on Thursday, with copious orders on hand, Trichy complex is poised to achieve a 30% increase in turnover at Rs 16,000 crore this fiscal against Rs 12,275 crore in 2010-11. Boiler components production is also expected to peak 8.50 lakh tonnes against six lakh tonnes last year. He said 40% of the production is to be achieved in the first half and the rest in the second half of current year.

The corporation has tied up with Railways for using the vacant yard (developed jointly with NTPC) at Shakthinagar in Uttar Pradesh. As it has agreed to the condition of Railways for using 40 rakes, BHEL will be issued a green pass to take the supply from Trichy to the yard without delay. This will help it to move 3000 tonnes in six days ( against 20 days taken by trucks)to five power plant sites in UP and Madhya Pradesh. It will come to one third of the cost for movement by road.

Mr Krishnan said it is looking at creating similar facilities for catering to customers in other parts of the country. BHEL is also discussing with Karaikal Port for shipping its supplies to Haldia and Paradip ports. It is equally looking at more than doubling production of components at 3 lakh tonnes ( against 1.25 lakh tonnes) through away centre fabrication units.

He said Trichy complex is gearing up to augment capacity in phase 3 from 10,000 mw to 15,000 mw by March next year at a cost of Rs 280 crore. It also hopes to commission the piping unit at Thirumayam by December at a cost of Rs 386 crore. Regarding the progress on the corporate strategic plan beyond 2012, he said it is getting delayed due to some uncertainties like gas pricing, availability of coal and lack of clarity in the case of nuclear plants.
