Golden Rock Railway Workshop in Tiruchi bags Green Shield Award for third consecutive year


The Golden Rock Railway Workshop has bagged the Green Shield Award, instituted by the Southern Railway headquarters, for the third consecutive year for its environmental protection and energy conservation measures, its Chief Workshop Manager P. Mahesh said on Friday.

He was speaking at the 56th Railway Week celebrations organised by the workshop at the Armoury Gate Grounds in Golden Rock here. Mr. Mahesh said the workshop had received a special award ‘Save Mother Earth' from the Tiruchi District Exnora for 2010 for carrying out clean and green activities.

Highlighting the activities carried out in 2010-11, Mr. Mahesh said the workshop had carried out periodic overhaul of 141 diesel locomotives as against the target of 120 locos set by the Railway Board.

It had turned out 952 coaches as against the target of 948 coaches, he said adding that 423 wagons including 108 ‘BOXN HL' type were manufactured during the 2010-11 fiscal.

The workshop had overhauled 17 locomotives belonging to public sector undertakings and gained revenue of Rs. 20.66 crore.

By exporting five in-service metre gauge diesel locomotives to Myanmar through RITES, a Government of India Enterprise, the workshop had earned foreign exchequer of Rs. 13.28 crore.

He said the workshop had received a prestigious order to manufacture BTFLN tank wagon for which procurement of material and outsourcing of tank wagon was under pipeline.

The Railway Board had placed an order to manufacture 50 tank wagons in line with the design of Ukraine tank wagons.

Orders for the manufacture of 600 BLL and 1,000 BLC wagons had been received from the Container Corporation of India Limited, a Government of India undertaking, for the current year.
