Air cargo complex at Tiruchi Airport soon

The air cargo complex at the Tiruchi Airport will become functional once the Central Board of Excise and Customs issues a notification paving the way for direct export and import of cargo from here.

According to highly placed sources at the airport, the Central Board of Excise and Customs has issued the notification permitting “unloading of imported goods and loading of export goods or any class of such goods,' at the airport. The notification had been received by officials of the Airports Authority of India at the airport on Thursday, an airport official, confirmed.

The issue of the notification brings to an end the uncertainty over the issue, and speculations over when, the air cargo complex at the airport will begin functioning. Though the Central Board of Excise and Customs had approved the proposal a few months ago, the complex did not become functional on December 1as expected.

AAI sources also said steps were afoot to create the necessary infrastructure at the airport from where the air cargo complex would function.

Space and other infrastructure would be provided at the old terminal building of the airport, they said.

Once the infrastructure is ready, the complex is expected to start functioning.

Welcoming the notification, an official of a major airline operating out of the city said the move would open up huge potential for export and import of goods from here. This, he pointed out, was a long felt need of the industry and travel trade in the region. “This opens up a hitherto unexploited business opportunity. We have been concentrating on increasing air connectivity so far and we can now focus on tapping the revenue potential from cargo,” he said.
