Faculty identification puts IIM-Tiruchi on back burner

The much-awaited Indian Institute of Management – Tiruchi (IIM-Tiruchi) has failed to take off this year reportedly due to difficulties faced by the mentoring institution – IIM-Bangalore – in identifying faculty.

The IIM-Tiruchi sanctioned for Tamil Nadu was expected to get functional this year along with three other new IIMs - Ranchi (Jharkhand), Raipur (Chattisgarh) and Rohtak (Haryana).

However, only the IIMs in Jharkhand and Rohtak could get off to a successful start. The seven existing IIMs are in Calcutta, Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Lucknow, Kozhikode, Indore and Shillong.

The IIM-Ranchi has launched its PGDM (Post-Graduate Diploma in Management) programme for the 2010-12 batch with the highest CAT (Common Admission Test) cut-off of 99.65 percentile with support from IIM-Calcutta, its mentoring institution. Similarly, IIM-Rohtak has commenced its PGDM programme with the support of IIM-Lucknow.

Despite the two visits made during the course of this year by high-level teams led by top officials of the Ministry of Human Resource Development to Tiruchi for the purpose of identifying the temporary facilities, no tangible progress could be made.

The State Government, on its part, did facilitate the process of identifying temporary facilities. Of the few options provided to the visiting teams, the possibility was narrowed down to utilising the buildings spared by the National Institute of Technology – Tiruchi and the Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited. While the NIT-T was prepared to provide an entire hostel building to accommodate IIM-Tiruchi students, the BHEL came forward to provide classrooms.

Official sources said the MHRD officials were non-committal about taking a decision.

The opinion of the State Government officials who accompanied their Central Government counterparts during the two visits is that the onus to get the institution started this year was on the MHRD. The expectation of the MHRD officials for the temporary facilities was of a tall order, official sources said.

There are, however, indications that the IIM-Tiruchi will get functional from the next academic year along with the two more IIMs in Uttarkhand and Rajasthan. The Central Public Works Department (CPWD) will shortly erect a fence on the peripheries of the permanent site for IIM-Tiruchi measuring about 192 acres sandwiched between the Bharathidasan University and the Anna University of Technology – Tiruchi, along the Tiruchi-Pudukkottai National Highway, official sources added.
