Anna University of Technology- Tiruchi without VC for five months

The undue delay on the part of the State Government in announcing the next Vice-Chancellor for Anna University of Technology- Tiruchi has disappointed academic circles in central districts. The Government on Saturday confined itself to appointing the first Vice-Chancellors for the newly formed Anna University of Technology – Chennai and Anna University of Technology – Madurai.

The AUT-T has remained without a regular Vice-Chancellor for nearly five months now, after the first VC V. Ramachandran laid down office following his three-year term. Vacancies for the posts of Registrar and Controller of Examinations also need to be filled in the AUT-T. Administration of a recently formed university under adhoc arrangement in three key posts does not augur well academically, according to a principal.

For instance, only a regular Vice-Chancellor for AUT-T will be in a position to fulfil administrative formalities comprehensively for hand over of engineering colleges in the southern districts of Sivaganga, Theni, Dindigul and Ramanathapuram for affiliation to the newly formed Anna University of Technology – Madurai.

With the necessity for taking vital decisions for immediate situations arising, any further delay in the announcement of the new VC for the AUT-T could lead to legal complications arising from stop-gap decisions, according to another Principal. In fact, it is for the first time in Tamil Nadu that a university has remained without a Vice-Chancellor for five months, he said.

A three-year-old university that could get off to a sound start can ill-afford to go slow on taking decisions pertaining to on-going and new constructions, faculty appointments, academic monitoring and other such important areas, that have a bearing on the academic quality of students. This is the apt juncture to accelerate the momentum, educationists pointed out.
