Tiruchi ideal investment destination: Nehru
Tiruchi with its advantages of reasonable land costs and perennial water supply is the ideal destination for builders to make huge investments. With land costs spiralling in Chennai, Coimbatore and Madurai, builders there were facing limitations, Transport Minister K.N. Nehru said on Sunday.
IT companies prefer Tiruchi after Chennai. The profile of Tiruchi as an investment destination has enhanced owing to this factor and the sanction of IIM, Mr. Nehru pointed out, addressing a function organised by the Builders' Association of India (BAI), Tiruchi Centre, to mark the installation of its new team of office-bearers for 2010-11.
Promising the support of the State Government to control the “unreasonable” rise in the cost of cement due to cartelisation, he urged the BAI to take a collective and forceful initiative at the State level in this regard.
There was no reason why the cost of cement for which the raw materials were available locally should witness rapid fluctuations, he observed.
Mr. Nehru promised to provide land to the BAI, Tiruchi Centre, in the 20-acre site to be identified for setting up a permanent trade centre as in Coimbatore, for creating training facilities. He apprehended resistance from Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority to the idea of establishment of independent authorities for plan approval in the cities of Madurai, Coimbatore and Tiruchi, but was confident that the Government would be able to iron out the differences.
Guest of honour S. Regupathy, former Union Minister and Founder of Karpaga Vinayaga Educational Trust, emphasised on the need for sustaining the country's unique cultural facets in building designs. Heritage buildings should be preserved with the support of Central and State Governments. Mr. Regupathy said the BAI had a vital role to play in enhancing quality of buildings.
State Chairman of BAI (Tamil Nadu and Puducherry) K. Viswanathan hoped that the membership in Tiruchi Centre will increase from 438 to 500 during this year, and suggested conduct of seminars and workshops periodically for keeping the members abreast of the latest technology. Referring to the establishment of a School of Construction Artisans at a college in Coimbatore for skill orientation to labourers, Mr. Viswanathan wanted the Tiruchi Centre to follow suit to address manpower shortage.
