Three fire tenders inducted to Trichy Airport

Three state-of-the-art Aircraft Crash Fire Tenders imported from Austria at a cost of about Rs. 4 crore each, have been inducted into service at the Tiruchi Airport.

The vehicles manufactured by Rosenbauer group, one of the largest manufacturers of fire fighting vehicles in the world, have a water storage capacity of about 10,500 litres. The vehicles could also store 1,300 litres of foam besides dry chemical powder to put out undercarriage fires.

The vehicles could put out fire on the move too. The tubes mounted on top, powered by high-quality pump, are capable of spraying 5,000 litres a minute for a distance of 85 metres. The fire-tender has fully computerised controls in the air-conditioned cabin. They are fitted with ladders that can reach a height of upto 45 metres.

Proximity suits, cutting and breathing equipment have also been provided, apart from a lifting bag, with a capacity of 40 tonnes. The vehicles have a maximum speed of 140 km and can reach a speed of 85 km within 35 seconds. The fire tenders are fitted with Global Positioning System. The airport fire and operational staff were trained in the operation of the vehicles by a team from the company. The week-long training was conducted in the first week of the April following which the fire tenders were inducted into service on April 14, according to S. Dharmaraj, Airport Controller.
