New bypass sanctioned for Tiruchi

The city is all set to get a new bypass connecting three major national highways (NH), the Tiruchi-Thanjavur NH 67, the Tiruchi-Pudukottai-Karaikudi NH 210 and the Tiruchi-Madurai NH 45B.

The bypass, which would be a semi-ring road, has been sanctioned under the four-laning project of the Tiruchi-Karaikudi section of NH 210 by the National Highways Authority of India.

The project would be taken up under the “build, operate and transfer” mode under the National Highways Development Project –Phase III A, sources told The Hindu here on Tuesday.

The sanction should bring in some relief for residents of the Ariyamangalam-Kattur-Tiruverambur areas in the city who have been agitating over the past few months seeking service roads along the Tiruchi-Thanjavur Highway that is being four-laned currently. The absence of four lanes, the residents complained, was leading to frequent accidents. Once the new by-pass comes, traffic on this urban stretch is likely to come down substantially though Chennai and other north-bound vehicles will still have to go via the city to reach the Tiruchi-Chennai Highway.

The new by-pass will run from Thuvakudi area to the Mathur region on the Tiruchi-Pudukottai Highway and then on to Panchapur on the Tiruchi-Madurai Highway. Another by-pass is being laid between Panchapur and Jeeyapuram on the Tiruchi-Karur Highway. Once the new by-pass between NH 67 and NH 45 B is laid, the city would almost have a ring road, with only the Tiruchi-Chennai Highway being the missing link.

Alignment

According to sources, the exact alignment for the new by-pass is being finalised and the land acquisition process will be taken up shortly. The tender for four-laning of the Tiruchi-Karaikudi section, a distance of about 100 km, is to be awarded soon.
