Indoor Stadium construction in full swing

There is cause to rejoice for sportspersons in Tiruchi since many facilities with international standards are coming up at the Anna Stadium here.

Once these facilities are in place, it is expected to become a sought-after city for hosting big meets.

The construction of a multi-purpose indoor stadium at the Anna Stadium complex, the works of which had come to a grinding halt due to various reasons a couple of years ago, has resumed with the State government sanctioning funds to the tune of Rs. 1.41 crore.

The multi-purpose indoor stadium is expected to be completed by June. On completion, the stadium can host a range of events including basketball, volleyball, badminton and handball with a capacity to accommodate over 2,000 spectators.

“Sports such as basketball or volleyball are played indoors at higher levels these days. The indoor facility is a boon to the players. Also, training sessions will not be affected due to rain,” felt a coach.

The astro turf facility coming up at the stadium should benefit hockey players in Tiruchi and neighbouring districts. For the hockey aspirants, playing on astro turf is a dream. Practicing on the gravel ground will seldom help players aiming to make it at the highest level.

The State government has sanctioned Rs. 3.50 crore to the Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu for laying the astro turf of international standard. A separate spectator gallery has been planned. The astro-turf in Tiruchi will be the fourth of its kind in the State.

“Tiruchi has produced quality players over the years. Among the current players there are many, who have the talent to make it big. We are happy that Tiruchi is getting astro-turf as it would provide the budding players the much-needed exposure in speed game,” says P. Khadar Mohideen, a hockey enthusiast.

The squash court that is being established at the sprawling stadium complex is sure to gain popularity among youngsters, feel sports lovers. First phase of works connected with its establishment has commenced. The new court is being constructed at a total cost of 18.50 lakh with authorities raising a portion of funds from the public for this project.

Apart from being a competitive sport, playing squash is one of the best ways to stay fit. And the facility will be much to the liking of the fitness freaks, say sports lovers.

The other facilities at the Anna Stadium include a football ground, swimming pool, gymnasium and a sports hostel. Former international high jumper and secretary of the Tiruchi District Athletics Association, N. Annavi said that athletes are awaiting a synthetic track in the stadium.

“We have highly talented athletes who have excelled at the international level. After practicing on the mud track it is very difficult to adjust to the synthetic surface. Yet the athletes have done well. It will be easier for those in other parts to come to Tiruchi and practice if the facility were to come through.”
