Anna Varsity plans Green Engineering Centre

Integrating itself into ‘Save Our Blue Planet’ campaign, Anna University – Tiruchi is to take the expertise of the National Solid Waste Association of India (NSWAI) and the International Solid Waste Association (ISWA) to establish a Centre for Green Engineering and Science (CGES), and offer a new M.E. programme in Environmental Engineering from the coming academic year.

Flanked by G. Krishnamoorthy, Professor at San Diego State University, California, who is presently working with the NSWAI and ISWA, and Amiya Kumar Sahu, the President of NSWAI, the Vice-Chancellor said on Tuesday that graduates in Civil Engineering will be admitted to the new programme to begin with. In due course, graduates of all engineering disciplines will be admitted. M.E. graduates of any discipline will be enrolled for research.

Equipment worth Rs.30 crore will be installed at the two laboratories planned for the Centre: Environmental Monitoring Lab and Environmental Computation Lab, he said. During December 2010, the University will host an International Conference on Solid Waste and Environment, akin to the first international conference held in Anna University, Coimbatore, during August 2009.

Explaining the mandate of the CGES, Prof. Krishnamoorthy stressed that the world must be sensitised to the grave consequences due to melting of polar ice caps due to global warming. Coastal cities are bound to submerge due to drastic rise in sea level, cautioned Prof. Krishnamoorthy, who is working with several universities globally to set up an International Institute of Green Engineering with help and guidance from the former President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam.

The CGES will play a crucial role in providing the expertise to municipal administrations for eco-friendly solid waste management, generating green energy, and remedying the situation caused by global warming, Dr. Sahu said. The CGES will be made a nerve centre to propagate the 4 R’s (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and Recover) concept to rural areas through innovative technologies and train the trainers programmes, he said.
