Potential of Tiruchi reinforced

‘Empower IT Tiruchi 2009’ student convention here on Friday threw up the most-desired promise — leading IT industries have indeed begun to look towards Tiruchi as a potential investment destination. Quality educational institutions, huge talent pool, diverse culture, geographic location, and connectivity-ranked prominence are among the factors IT leaders recognised as strengths of Tiruchi. Vice-President of NASSCOM (National Association of Software and Services Companies) Rajiv A. Vaishnav felt certain that Tiruchi has the potential to even rank first among tier-II cities in IT development in the entire South.

Representatives of major IT companies generated hope in the minds of students by viewing the worldwide economic recession as an opportunity for expanding their operations in tier-II cities in view of the cost-advantage considered vital to tide over the stiff competition from China and The Philippines. Their eagerness was coupled with the State Government’s intention to expand the reach of industrial development beyond Chennai.

The convention organised by Electronics Corporation of Tamil Nadu (ELCOT) in association with the NASSCOM enabled the thousands of student participants from engineering, and arts and science colleges in Tiruchi and seven surrounding districts to get a clear understanding of the industry’s perception of technical and soft skills.

A right mix of technical and soft skills is what the IT industry looks for, K.N. Visveswaran, Mentor - Campus Recruitment, Hexaware Technologies, said.

Sundari Ramakrishnan, Assistant Dean, National Management School, said that candidates must learn to work under no supervision. A positive and optimistic attitude and a willingness to learn were of utmost importance, she said.

The day-long convention featured panel discussions by eminent academicians and industry leaders on ‘Tier II - An Opportunity Tiruchi’ chaired by PWC Davidar, Secretary, Information Technology Department; ‘Raise and Redeem - Recession ends’ by Santhosh Babu, Managing Director, ELCOT; ‘Bridging Industry- Academia gap’ by K. Ramachandran, Senior Manager - Corporate Communication, Cognizant Technology Solutions; and ‘Should industry find a role in curriculum making’ chaired by Jaya Ramakrishna, Vice-President, Tata Consultancy Services.

Taking part in the final discussion, Vice-Chancellor of Bharathidasan University M. Ponnavaikko emphasised that a mechanism must be created for industry and academia to work together on joint projects. Vice-Chancellor of Anna University V. Ramachandran insisted that curriculum must necessarily be aligned to the ascent of industry while the Vice-Chancellor of Periyar Maniammai University wanted industries to invest on research and development.
