Several structures in Tiruverambur removed for four-lane project

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) on Friday removed several unauthorised structures in Tiruverambur and reclaimed its land for proceeding with its four-laning project on the 55-km Tiruchi-Thanjavur stretch of NH 67.

The large-scale eviction that was seen as the last major hurdle is expected to expedite the project that has already suffered time overrun, apparently due to the delay caused by owners of buildings along the stretch.

Though eviction was inevitable, the shop owners had reportedly not paid heed to the notice issued by NHAI a month ago. According to locals, the cooperation of the shop owners was sought by the NHAI even on Thursday over the public address system. About 50 police personnel, including a chunk from the Armed Reserve wing, provided security cover. The shop owners did not offer any resistance, said a police official. In fact, once the eviction work commenced, workers of several shops were themselves seen removing encroachments. Those who had illegally constructed concrete structures watched helplessly as they were reduced to rubble. The operation that began at about 10 was carried out till the evening.

The NHAI, it is learnt, will first go ahead with the four-laning project and subsequently acquire lands on the margins for laying service lanes. Early completion of the project will be of immense utility to the public sector giant Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited and hundreds of ancillary units.
