Nehru promises land to set up trade centre

TIRUCHI: All steps would be taken for allotting land to the Bharat Heavy Electrical Limited Small and Medium Industries Association (BHELSIA) for setting up a trade centre, State Transport Minister K.N.Nehru said here.

Speaking at an interaction meeting organised for assessing the demands of the members of the BHELSIA here on Monday, Mr. Nehru conceded that there was a strong case for setting up the trade centre on par with that in Coimbatore for promoting industrial development in this district.

The Minister assured that he would lead a delegation of office-bearers of BHELSIA for a discussion with Deputy Chief Minister M.K. Stalin to discuss their demands

With the Tiruverambur belt forming the nerve centre of the district’s industrial development and with a view to enhancing the eligibility for obtaining Centrally-sponsored schemes for industrial cities, it has been planned to extend the jurisdiction of the city corporation up to Thuvakudi.

Earlier, BHELSIA president Rajappa Rajkumar pleaded for exemption from the power holiday for all its member-units.

The daily power cut of two hours had resulted in a monthly loss of 10,000 tonnes in terms of productivity and Rs.1.6 crore in terms of wages, forcing the BHEL authorities to place the purchase orders outside Tamil Nadu, where uninterrupted power supply was assured.

He also wanted the Thuvakudi industrial estate to be upgraded as an industrial township for getting additional infrastructure. The power supply through agriculture feeder to the BHELSIA units located in Pudukudi was causing more harm than good, due to unscheduled power trips. He wanted the feeder to be notified as industrial transmission segment.

Tiruverambur MLA K.N. Sekaran and the vice-president of BHELSIA S. Sriram spoke.
