Productivity council initiates move for banana cluster

The Tiruchirapalli Productivity Council (TPC) is launching a special initiative towards the establishment of a cluster of enterprises on banana products/processing and value addition.

Banana is the most important fruit crop in India having great socio-economic significance. Banana contributes 31 per cent of the total fruit production in India.

The total area under banana cultivation in Tamil Nadu is 83,308 hectare with an annual production of 2.7-8.0 million tonnes.

Further, farmers in the central districts of Tiruchi, Karur and Perambalur, cultivate banana in 14,700 hectares to around from 20,000.

According to Raja Mutthirulandi, Secretary General of the TPC, the Council had decided to strategically yoke the potential of the region registering abundant growth of banana varieties such as ‘Poovan’, ‘Robusta’, ‘Silk’, ‘Red’, ‘Karpuravaili’, ‘Bluggoe’, ‘Nendran’ and the famous hill banana, ‘Virupakshi’ by forming banana cluster of enterprises in order to manufacture by products of banana.
National workshop

Sivaramakrishnan, Chairman, Sankara Group of Institutions, who has extensively interacted with the TPC on this subject, has taken a lead in organising a national workshop on establishing banana based enterprises in Tiruchi in December.

The workshop jointly hosted by the TPC and Sankara Group of Institutions, Tiruchi, will be on the theme ‘Entrepreneurs to Enterprises’. Leading experts, technologists experienced in banana products and processing, financial institutions,

Government of India representatives and policy formulators are charted to participate in the workshop to motivate, identify and assist interested entrepreneurs from different regions.
Consultative meet

S. Sridharan, Chairman of the TPC says that in order to chalk out a concrete programme of action, the Council has called for a first level consultative meeting of experts and interested entrepreneurs. The first consultative meet will be held at the Council’s Dalmia Hall November 1.Based on such consultations, the POA will be drawn up by TPC to go ahead with the establishment of cluster of industries on banana products/processing
