New Collectorate within a year

The new integrated Collectorate complex for Tiruchi will be ready within a year. Construction of the new building, sanctioned at an estimated cost of Rs.12 crore, began here on Wednesday and is scheduled to be completed by October 30, 2010.

The 1.10 lakh square feet building will come up on a seven-acre land in front of the Collector’s Office campus in the city. The land, previously held by the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board and the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation, Pudukottai, has been taken over by the district administration. The buildings at the site were demolished in the past couple of months. Collector T.Soundiah and senior officials were present at a bhoomi pooja performed ahead of the commencement of construction at the site on Wednesday. The Collectorate block will consist of ground plus three floors with two elevators, according to Public Works Department sources. The ground floor will have a conference hall with a seating capacity of about 500. Besides, two mini meeting halls for officials will be located on the first floor. The building had been designed to achieve maximum energy efficiency with ample ventilation, the sources said. The Collector’s office, constructed in 1995, has been found inadequate to accommodate various government departments. Most government offices were functioning from rented buildings. Tiruchi Revenue Divisional Office, currently functioning in a cramped and old building on the Collectorate campus, would be shifted to the Collector’s Office building after the new block was readied. Sources also indicated that the district administration has proposed to build an auditorium with a seating capacity of about 2,500, opposite to the new building site.
