BSNL To introudce High Speed Boradband

The Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has targeted to achieve full utilisation of its broadband capacity in Tiruchi telecom district within the next six months.

BSNL currently had 25,000 working broadband connections against its existing capacity to provide about 61,000 connections in Tiruchi telecom district. The service was now available on demand, said A. Balraj, Principal General Manager, BSNL, Tiruchi, here on Saturday.

Addressing a press conference to announce the launch of new tariff plans under its broadband service, Mr. Balraj said that the BSNL would shortly introduce high speed broadband services of 8, 16 and 24 Mbps bandwidth. The testing of the equipment was under way. Three combo tariff plans of Rs.2,799, Rs.4,999 and Rs.8,999 would be offered for the high speed connections.

This apart, three other new tariff plans of Rs.599, Rs.749 and Rs.1,111 were being introduced for both home and business categories of customers. The plans would offer download limits of four to 15 GB.

Under the home category two combo plans of Rs.1,499 and Rs.2,999 were being offered with unlimited download. The installation charge of Rs.250 was being waived for new broadband connections and 25 per cent concession was offered to serving and retired government servants.

BSNL has rectified certain complaints in the service, including low speed and disruptions. The problem was caused by a change in server recently. However, the problem of low speed was also owing to a few other factors such as system compatibility and coupling of cables with electric lines at the customers end. Broadband customers could register their complaints over the toll-free number 1500 round-the-clock. Customers could also get to know their broadband usage by sending a SMS and get an alert message when the broadband free limit was exceeding by registering through SMS to a designated number.

Answering a query, Mr. Balraj said the BSNL was facing a major problem in its attempts to replace overhead telephone lines with underground cables by way of the frequent damages caused to the underground cables by other utility service providers. “Our cables are being damaged indiscriminately during the execution of underground drainage and road widening projects,” he said. So far about 60 to 70 per cent of the overhead lines have been replaced with underground cables.
