Tiruchi-Madurai electrificiation work

Southern Railway has to decide on operating electrical locomotives for trains on Villupuram-Tiruchi section, according to G.R. Vij, General Manager, Central Organisation for Railway Electrification (CORE).

After laying foundation stone for an overhead equipment and power supply installation depot building here on Thursday, he told reporters that electrified Villupuram-Tiruchi section had been handed over to Southern Railway. “It is up to them to decide on from when to operate electrical locomotives for trains,” Mr. Vij said.

Stating that safety clearance had been given for the electrified line and goods trains were already been hauled by electrical locomotives in the section, he said a power sub-station had been commissioned and only a minor work was pending with the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board. The work was expected to be over by the month-end.

“Probably, the Southern Railway wanted to avoid change of locomotives at Tiruchi and hence was waiting for completion of electrification work till Madurai,” he said. To a question, he clarified that reported power shortage in Tamil Nadu was in no way connected to the delay in using electrified locomotives for trains. “The sanction of Electricity Boards is obtained while planning for railway electrification projects. The boards would be correspondingly planning for increasing their power generation,” he said.

On the Tiruchi-Madurai electrificiation work, he said work between Tiruchi and Dindigul would be completed by October and up to Madurai by February-end.

Madurai Divisional Railway Manager, Anil Singhal, and Chief Project Manager, Railway Electrification, Chennai, R.P. Udayakumar were present.
