3-D science theatre infuses interest into science learning

TIRUCHI: The 3-D Science Theatre that has been commissioned in the Anna Science Centre–Planetarium, Tiruchi, for popularising science and technology has evoked a promising response from students and teachers.

The science inputs provided creatively through the facility are as much effective as the impact they create in the minds of the students. This educational facility is the second of its kind in the State. The only other 3-D Theatre exists at the Periyar Science and Technology Centre in Chennai.

With a seating capacity of 60, the facility at the Tiruchi Planetarium established at a cost of Rs. 15 lakh will feature any two of the five modules: Magic, Animal History, Pre-Historia, Funny Animals, and Deep Ocean Exploration, in a 15-minute show. The Planetarium charges a nominal Rs. 10 per member.

There are several other interesting modules on science and technology and they will be introduced gradually, according to the Project Director (in-charge) T.M. Alagiri Swamy Raju. The purpose is to motivate the budding minds, he said.

Over the past couple of days, the response of students has been overwhelming. For instance, students who watched dinosaurs flying in the show titled Pre-Historia had a feeling that they were also moving along with the reptile in the same momentum.

According to a teacher, the 3-D Theatre is bound to make science learning very interesting. “Though we have planned for eight shows a day, additional shows will be arranged in accordance with the crowd turnout,” said Mr. Alagiri Swamy Raju.

The Anna Science Centre – Planetarium has been receiving several thousands of visitors mainly constituting students and teachers all through the year. Besides the Planetarium programme, the Centre features environment gallery, activity gallery, dinosaur in action, try science – around the world, weight on planets, terrestrial telescope watching, science park, renewable energy park, sun dials – park, circus of force, Vigyan Prasar Edusat, live science demonstrations, night sky observation (every second Saturday between 7.00 p.m. and 8.30 p.m.), and extension science activities.
