Sub-Jail Road opened for traffic after few decades

TIRUCHI: After a gap of about three to four decades, the Sub-Jail Road in Tiruchi has been thrown open for traffic, especially for town buses, thanks to the decision of the Police Commissioner Karuna Sagar.

The road had been heavily encroached upon by a large number of onion wholesale traders and scrap dealers. The traders who had small shops on the road were virtually occupying the entire stretch for displaying their wares and to conduct their business. Apart from onion stocks, scrap metal lay in heaps along the road all these years so much so that not even two wheeler riders could use the road.

Based on the direction of Mr. Karuna Sagar, the police had recently asked the traders to remove all unauthorised structures put up in front of their shops. Town buses and heavy vehicles heading towards Mainguard Gate/Chathram Bus Stand have started plying on the road since Thursday. The operation of buses via the road would help reduce the traffic congestion on the Madurai Road. Besides, commuters visiting the Gandhi Market could now alight near the Vengaya Mandi, close to the market, rather than having to trek from Marakkadai when the buses were operated on the Madurai Road. “Removal of the encroachments on the road is a welcome move. Traders cannot be allowed to block an entire road,” observed S. Pushpavanam, Secretary, Consumer Protection Council, Tamil Nadu.

The move, though largely welcomed by the residents, has run into opposition expectedly from traders occupying the road all these years. A group of traders observed a fast protesting the move. They claimed that they would be thrown out of business, if bus services continue to be operated on the road. The traders demanded that operation of buses on the road be suspended until they were allocated alternative sites.

Representatives of the traders also met Mr. Karuna Sagar. But the Commissioner is said to have stood firm, pointing out that a public road cannot be allowed to be completely taken over for business.
