TIRUCHIRAPPALLI: Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL), Tiruchirappalli recently held its Sub-contractors' Meet 2009, where 19 subcontracting firms under various categories were recognized and presented awards based on the firms' performance. Delivering the key-note address, Mr V Ananthakrishnan, Executive Director, BHEL, Tiruchirappalli , urged the subcontracting firms to increase their capacities to manufacture headers and panels, as the requirement for these products would increase in the coming years. He wanted the firms to follow the just in time concept to avoid inventory buildup.

Mr Ananthakrishnan wanted the subcontracting firms to increase their capability to suit the latest needs of BHEL in supercritical technology, and at the same time not missing out on quality and safety.

"Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL), Tiruchirappalli will achieve a turnover growth of 28 to 30 per cent in 2009-10" said Mr V Ananthakrishnan, Executive Director, BHEL, Tiruchirappalli. He said while the turnover target fixed for the unit for this fiscal is Rs.9500 crore, the unit is expected to achieve a figure of Rs.10,000 crore depending on the business potential available. Mr Ananthakrishnan attributed the success of BHEL in the last financial year to the efforts put in by all the subcontractors of BHEL.

While the Away Centre Fabrication (ACF) yielded logistical advantages to BHEL, Mr Ananthakrishnan assured the local firms that loading of ACF would not be at the cost of local subcontractors. He urged the industrialists to shift their focus from tonnage to sequential dispatch and to increase erectability at sites to meet the customer commitments.

Felicitating the award winning subcontracting firms, Mr R Sundar, Director of Boilers, Government of Tamil Nadu, said that the subcontracting firms should concentrate on developing skilled manpower and human welfare to sustain growth.

Mr A Chandrababu, General Manager (Outsourcing), BHEL, in his speech said that in 2008-09, the outsourcing firms achieved a tonnage of about 1.7 lakhs MT. The number of subcontracting firms also increased from 346 to 429 in the last one year and the production capacity increased by 32 per cent, he said. He asked the subcontracting firms to increase their production capacity by 50 per cent and still BHEL could give assured business as BHEL expected its business to grow by 50 per cent.

On business to Away Centre Fabrication units, Mr Chandrababu said that in 2008-09, 40,000 MT were made through ACF and this was expected to increase to 2 lakhs MT in 2009-10.

Listing steps taken to satisfy customer commitments, Mr Chandrababu said BHEL had identified and developed certain firms to manufacture suspensions for boilers and wind boxes and this would be extended to manufacture doors. BHEL also planned to load the firms PGMA-wise (Product Group Main Assembly-wise) instead of splitting the same and encourage I-type columns instead of Plus type columns for small boilers. Next financial year, BHEL expected to manufacture more than 4 lakhs MT through outsourcing of which 2,70,000 MT would be from Tiruchirappalli firms, he said.
