BIM moving to New Campus

TIRUCHI: Bharathidasan University has commenced the process of shifting its Centre of Distance Education (CDE) from the Khajamalai premises to its main campus.

For administrative reasons the CDE has to be closer to the office of the Controller of Examinations, the Vice-Chancellor M. Ponnavaikko said on Wednesday. The reception in the administrative office in the main campus has been spruced up. Students can obtain information they need from the touch screen placed at the reception from where a desk of the CDE will also function.

Simultaneously, the Departments of Social Work, Sociology, History, Economics and Women’s Studies are being shifted to the Khajamalai campus.

These departments will function from the building hitherto occupied by the CDE.

Likewise, the university has also initiated steps to shift Bharathidasan Institute of Management (BIM) to the Khajamalai campus. A 12-acre site is being readied for the purpose.

The plan for the Rs. 45 crore infrastructure encompassing the academic block, hostels and staff quarters is also ready he said.

The BIM’s new campus will be established in three phases. From the start of the academic year 2010-11 by when the first phase of construction will be over, the BIM will function from the Khajamalai campus.

Students of the institute are enthusiastic about the prospect of moving to own campus, he said. The nationally reputed business school will have a separate entrance.

Born in 1984 out of a partnership between the Bharathidasan University and BHEL, Tiruchi, the institute has been enjoying a symbiotic relationship with BHEL in terms of academic inputs and continuous industry exposure.

The state-of-art new campus is being projected as its silver jubilee achievement.
