Villupuram-Tiruchi electrification by year-end

CHENNAI: Electrification of the Villupuram-Tiruchi section in all probability will be a New Year gift to people of Tamil Nadu and the electrification up to Dindigul will be over before the end of the current financial year.

Erection of poles, portal and wiring had been completed up to the Coleroon bridge near Srirangam, about 10 km from Tiruchi. Wiring work is in progress between Srirangam and Tiruchi Junction while pole and portal work had been completed up to Ponmalai station, 2 km from Tiruchi. Though the total length is 173 km, electrification has to be done for 290 km, including loop lines.

Central Organisation for Railway Electrification (CORE) officials said wiring from Srirangam to Tiruchi Junction would be a difficult task. As the section was heavily saturated it would be difficult to suspend the traffic between these two stations. After completing the wiring work, fine tuning had to be done before applying for charging. After that the Commissioner of Railway Safety would inspect the electrification work for clearing the section for passenger traffic. All these works would take at least two more months to complete. As the Railway Board had fixed December for completing the task, officials were working round the clock to complete it before the target date. A substation had already been set up at Ariyalur and substations are being set up at Vriddhachalam and Tiruchi junctions.

As all works had been completed between Villupuram and Ariyalur, the section would soon be opened for freight traffic within a week. Regarding work from Tiruchi to Dindigul, the officials said foundation work was already over and pole erection was completed up to Manaparai.
