Trichy - Energy Capital

Energex 2008 will aim to promote Tiruchi, a city bustling with energy, as the next big power destination of the country…
Tiruchi has come a long way from being the citadel of Cholas, known for the Rock Fort, sprawling temples and towering churches to becoming a hub of education and the fabrication capital of the country.

Even when it was an agrarian economy, the city was a thriving commercial centre in Tamil Nadu with several industrial units manufacturing artificial diamonds, cigars, handlooms and glass bangles. Tiruchi attained a prominent position in the industrial map of India after the setting up of Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL), a public sector undertaking giant that was established on the outskirts of the city. BHEL brought with it a cluster of power products manufacturing units that boosted the economy of the city considerably.

Tiruchi has now consolidated itself as the capital of boiler and windmill manufacturing and fabrication industry in India, thanks to the innovative entrepreneurship of its industrialists. Now it contributes to 70 per cent of the requirement of power product manufacturing in the country.

It was to establish Tiruchi's potential as the fabrication capital of India and a major engineering hub that CII organised Energex 2005, an energy excellence exhibition that offered a platform for industries here to showcase their potential under one roof. Three years after the success of the event, CII is now gearing up to organize the second edition of the exhibition, Energex 2008.

"Tiruchi is already the fabrication capital of India; we want to make it the fabrication capital of the world,'' says A Senthil Annamalai, Chairman, Confederation of India Industry, Tiruchi zone. The theme of the second edition is: Power to Power the world.
The three-day event, scheduled to begin on September 26 at St John's Vestry Anglo India School grounds is expected to generate business worth Rs500 crores, more than double the amount generated by the first edition held in 2005.

Energex 2008 will highlight the potential of four large boiler manufacturers, 30 pressure parts and boiler parts manufacturers, over 300 fabrication units, 200 machine shops and 10 windmill tower manufacturers, besides showcasing a pool of talent in design, research and development in the energy equipment and fabrication field.

[B} The expo is expected to attract around 5,000 business and trade visitors from around the world, besides 400 delegates[/b]. The event also helps build contacts among the industrial community, cultivate business relationships, imbibe latest technology trends and set the tone for further growth of the industry.

"Over 60 exhibitors from India and abroad will put up stalls in the expo,'' says P V Kannan, Chairman, Energex 2008 and Managing Director, Micromax Systems Private Limited. Exhibitors profiles of this exclusive event for the energy equipment industry includes boilers and boiler products, power plant auxiliaries and accessories, windmill components, heavy fabrication components, renewable energy products, transmission and distribution equipment, advanced fabrication tools, welding, paints and accessories, enterprise software and service providers.

The key participants of Energex 2008 include BHEL, Cethar Vessels, Wuxi Yangtong Mechanical Equipment Co Ltd, China, L&T, Ansaldo Caldaie Boilers, Carborandum Universal Limited, GK Sons Engineering Enterprises, Veesons Energy, American Environment Technologies Ltd, and CUMI (Murugappa Group).

Along with the exhibition, CII is also organising a one-and-a-half day conference focussing on 'Advanced technologies in power generation' on September 26 and 27 at Hotel Sangam. The conference will cover three exclusive sessions on Supercritical/high efficiency technologies for utilities, Subcritical/other technologies for industries and Green energy technologies for the globe.
The conference is an initiative to innovate and build structures and technologies to meet the energy demands of the 21st century. "Energex will showcase Tiruchi as a onestop solution for boiler and auxiliary products. The city should emerge into what Tiruppur is for hosiery sector," adds P V Kannan. Growth in the power product industry would in fact spur the overall growth of this city.
