Trichy Indoor Stadium to be ready by six months

TIRUCHI: Construction of the indoor stadium at the Anna Stadium complex, which had come to a halt, owing to a financial crunch, would resume soon and would be completed within six months from the date of award of the contract, the Member Secretary, Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu (SDAT) M.R. Mohan said.

The PWD had called for tender recently to restart the construction works of the indoor stadium. The last date for the validity of bids is September 10. “Once the formalities are over, the works would start immediately,” Mr. Mohan said.

Giving details on the facilities coming up in Tiruchi, he said that the land acquisition for the setting up of the high altitude training centre at Top Sengatupatti in Thuraiyur Taluk, which is located at an altitude of 3,100 feet, was over. The training centre aims at stretching the physical limits of the sportspersons thereby enabling them to shine at national and international levels. “The astro turf to be laid at the hockey ground would be of immense help to the players in Tiruchi and neighbouring districts,” Mr. Mohan added.

He said steps would be taken to fill the vacancies for the post of coaches in various districts and that those working as contract coaches at present would be considered if they suit the norms. He also commended the achievements of the Tiruchi sports hostel boys in tournaments conducted at various levels. After inspecting the various facilities at the stadium, Mr. Mohan took a look at the completed first phase of the Sports Hostel and also the ongoing second phase. The Regional Senior Manager, Tiruchi unit of SDAT, N. Sundaram, District Sports Officer, C. Punniyamoorthy and Sports Hostel Warden P. Kalaiselvan were present.

Later, Mr.Mohan inspected the Annai Sathya Stadium at Thanjavur.
