Sensitising people to railway safety

The Tiruchi Division of the Southern Railway has launched a campaign to sensitise people on the importance of railway safety as part of the Level Crossing Awareness Week.

Divisional Railway Manager, Tiruchi, P. U. K. Reddy, on Thursday, flagged off a rally at the Tiruchi Railway Junction to mark the International Level Crossing Awareness Day.

The rally was meant to raise awareness on safety while negotiating unmanned and manned level crossings. Officers and staff of Tiruchi division, members of Scouts and Guides, St. John Ambulance, Railway Civil Defence and students participated in the rally.

The Divisional Railway Manager also released a compact disc, brought out by the Safety Branch of the division, on safety aspects meant for the public and road users.

Safety checks were conducted at the manned and un-manned level crossings between Villupuram –Puducherry section along with staff from Railway Security Force and the Transport departments of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. Pamphlets, hand bills and CDs on safety were distributed to road users and villagers.

On Thursday, Mr. Reddy also flagged off a mobile railway safety awareness and propaganda vehicle. The vehicle will visit various railway stations in Tiruchi, Thanjavur, Kumbakonam, Mayiladuthurai, Vridhachalam, Cuddalore,Villupuram, Karaikal, Nagapattinam and Tiruvarur to raised awareness among the public and students about safe travel in train, safe crossing at level crossing gates, fire hazards, avoiding accidents due to footboard travel, roof travel, passenger safety and the need to use subways and foot overbridges for crossing railway tracks.
