Tiruchi prison to get jammer for its high security block

Security measure inside the Central Prison is set to be enhanced with the installation of an advanced jammer to thwart any illegal mobile phone usage by inmates.

Works relating to installation of the advanced jammer is already underway at the Central Prison accommodating around 1,500 prisoners.

Prison authorities said the electrical works connected with the installation of the jammer was expected to be over soon following which the equipment would be commissioned.

The jail authorities have planned to install the jammer at the high security block where a certain set of high-profile criminals have been lodged. “The equipment is expected to be activated before this month-end”, the authorities said.

The installation of jammer is in addition to the CCTV system, scanner and door frame metal detector.

The jammer's coverage would be around 100 metre radius from the spot it is installed, said the authorities.

Notwithstanding severe checks there have been instances in the past regarding detection of cell phone usage allegedly from prisoners inside the jail.

The jammer to be installed at the Tiruchi Central Prison would of the same type put up at the Vellore Central Prison, said a senior official. The sprawling jail complex is under round-the-clock security and surveillance by teams of jail and police officials.

The outer periphery is guarded by the armed Tamil Nadu Special Police personnel, while the jail officials take care of security and surveillance inside. The slew of CCTV units are connected to the chamber of the Superintendent of Prison to keep a tab on the movements taking place inside.
