Angioplasty could no longer be a mirage for heart patients visiting Mahatma Gandhi memorial government hospital (MGMGH) as the tertiary care hospital exuded confidence of launching the crucial facility here in February 2018.
"MGMGH will have Cath Lab ready in February 2018. Angioplasty can be done for the patients with heart ailments. The specialized doctors will be appointed to carry out the procedures in the facility," Dean Dr G Anitha told the reporters on Thursday.
Despite being a tertiary care hospital handling patients not only from Trichy but also from several neighbor districts, MGMGH lacked a full-fledged cardiac facility for a long time.
The department of cardiology which functioned with a single doctor for several years have got few more hands recently.
An assistant professor and three more doctors have been inducted into the department. However, except the assistant professor, the rest of them have not been absorbed into department fully as they have already been entrusted with duties in other departments also.

Emphasizing the need for a cath lab, Dr Anitha said that the cardiology department on the first floor of the super specialty and trauma care centre witnessed 300 to 370 patients every day for getting medicines for their cardiac related problems including heart attack.
In fact, the tertiary care hospital was so far able to treat the patients only with the medicines and was in a position to refer them to other government hospitals in other districts or to private hospital in case of need for angioplasty.
Sources said that the cardiology department faced at least two such cases requiring angioplasty every day.
On the recruitment of doctors to the hospital, Dean Anitha said that the hospital had got additional 21 doctors in addition to the existing 200 doctors recently to fill up the vacancies in all the departments in the hospital.
