Encroachments removed, Thanjavur main road likely to witness expansion

Synonymous with traffic snarls and congestion, Thanjavur main road, which branches out from Palpannai junction leading to Gandhi Market, is most likely to undergo road expansion work after decades. Ahead of commencing the much-needed move, highways department officials on Wednesday removed encroachments found on the stretch to enable vehicles to access the road at ease.

The last time Thanjavur main road witnessed an eviction drive by highways department was way back in 2010, thus letting a bunch of traders occupy a portion of the highways land ever since. According to department officials, a 2.2-km stretch — from Quaid-e-millat road to Thanjavur main road near Palpannai — was often identified as traffic congestion-prone stretch. Even as the road width varied from 7 metres to 15 metres along the stretch, several shops including metal traders, furniture and provisional stores were found encroaching a portion of the road, resulting in traffic snarls. "The nature of encroachment varies from temporary sheds and parking surface to even a portion of shops. Encroachments by more than 300 shops were evicted and this would decongest traffic to an extent," a highways department official told TOI.
