With the cinema hall at the Thyagaraja Bhagavathar Mandram, popularly known as Kalaiarangam, remaining closed for the past few months, the Tiruchi District Drama Artistes Association has appealed to the district administration to convert it into a public auditorium for staging plays and cultural events.

The cinema hall at the Kalairangam complex, run by the District Welfare Fund Committee, has remained closed for the past few months.

In a representation to the Collector, who is also the chairman of the District Welfare Fund Committee, M.S. Mohamed Masthan, general secretary of the association, pointed out that the city lacked a proper public auditorium with good facilities in a prominent locality. Although the Corporation’s Thevar Hall was functional, it lacked adequate parking space as it was situated on West Boulevard Road.

“The Kalaiarangam cinema remains closed now. Often, those who take the cinema hall on lease do not pay the rental dues properly. We hear there is a move to convert it into a marriage hall. The cinema hall can be converted into a public auditorium where plays, folk arts, music and cultural events can be held,” Mr. Masthan said in a representation to the Collector on Monday.

Pointing out that the Kalaiarangam complex already had a marriage hall, the drama artistes claimed that only about 50 marriages were being held there annually. There was no need for another marriage hall under the situation and the cinema hall could be used as a public auditorium and meet the aspirations of artistes and the general public of the city.
