Tiruchi - Thiruvananthapuram Intercity Express flagged off

The Tiruchi - Tirunelveli Intercity Express has been extended up to Thiruvananthapuram and Union Minister of State for Road Transport and Highways Pon. Radhakrishnan flagged off the inaugural run of the extended service from Tiruchi here on Saturday.

Mr. Pon. Radhakrishnan said he had taken up with Union Minister for Railways, Suresh Prabhu, the demand for extending the train to Thiruvanathapuram. Following this, the Railway Minister had announced the extension of the train.

Vellamandi N. Natarajan, Minister for Tourism, S. Valarmathi, Minister for Backward Class and Minorities Welfare, P. Kumar, and T. Rathinavel, MPs, P. Udaya Kumar Reddy, Divisional Railway Manager, and other senior officials, were present.

The timing of the trains have been revised consequent to the extension. The Tiruchi – Thiruvananthapuram Intercity Express (Train No. 22627) will leave Tiruchi Junction at 7.05 a.m. and arrive at Thiruvananthapuram at 3.25 p.m.

The Thiruvananthapuram – Tiruchi Intercity Express (Train No.22628) will leave at Thiruvananthapuram Central at 11.55 a.m. and arrive at Tiruchi at 8.15 p.m.

In addition to the existing stoppages, the train will also stop at Valliyur, Nagercoil Town and Kuliturai. The express train will have one AC chair car, seven second class chair coaches, eight general second class compartments and two luggage-cum-brake van. The Tiruchi – Tirunelveli Intercity Express was intro duced five years ago.

Warm reception was accorded to the train at Nagercoil Town Railway station in the afternoon.

Mr. Pon Radhakrishnan travelled in the train after flagging it off at Tiruchi. The train arrived at around 3.10 p.m. instead of the scheduled arrival of 2.58 p.m. The Minister said that continuous efforts would be taken to increase the frequency of Kanniyakumari-Nizammuddhin bi-weekly express to tri-weekly express.

He would take up the demand to ply new train to Varanasi and Ayodhi from Kanniyakumari with Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu, Mr. Radhakrishnan said.
