Students learn more about environment

Over 1,200 students of Classes 6 to 12 from 100 schools in the city recently got an opportunity to learn more about the environment and exhibit their skills in drawing, essay-writing and oratory through competitions organised by social welfare organisation Yugaa in association with the Rotaract club of TRP Engineering College (TRPEC).

Held on Sunday on the TRPEC campus in Irungalur, the event was called ‘Maasila Trichy (Clean Trichy) – LITZSPIRE’.

It was the third such initiative by Yugaa to raise the city’s profile in the national cleanliness campaign.

Earlier, Yugaa collaborated with the Tiruchi Corporation in an awareness and training drive on solid waste management.

This was followed by a door-to-door campaign on cleanliness and environment conservation. The contests were held in three categories: Classes 6-8, 9-10 and 11-12.

‘Smart City’ was the topic for the drawing competition, while ‘Green City’ was the theme of the essay contest. The speech contest had ‘Clean City’ as the topic. The drawing contest was open to students of all the three categories.

The essay contest was held for Classes 9-10, while the oratory competition was for Classes 11-12.

Speaking on the occasion, Allirani Balaji, president, Yugaa, said: “We strongly believe that the idea of cleanliness and a hygienic environment can be realised only when it is taught at a young age. When a child believes that protecting nature is part of his or her life, there begins the change.”

M. Ramakrishnan, Chief Education Officer, Tiruchi, was the chief guest. S. Malik Raj, Principal, TRPEC, and Allirani Balaji were felicitated during the function.
