Student strength of third KV at Goldenrock to go up

The current student strength of 230 at the third Kendriya Vidyalaya in the district started last year on the premises of Golden Rock Workshop in a temporary building for levels 1 to VI is poised to expand substantially in the coming years as the decks are being cleared for establishment of a permanent campus.

Soil test is being undertaken at a 6.4 acre land near Jail Corner provided by the Railway authorities for establishing the permanent campus, according to KV sources. Suitability of the site was determined by the Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan on the parameters of approach road, drinking water and power availability.

The proposal for a Kendriya Vidyalaya in the city limits that was pursued by a section of parents for several years received a thrust during 2011 when a senior official of the Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan, Chennai Region, made a strong recommendation based on a spot study during 2011. The official had, during the visit inspected the site for the permanent campus.

The school now functions temporarily out of an old building of the Railway Mixed School in the GOC premises.

The two older Kendriya Vidyalayas at the Ordnance Factory Estate and Heavy Alloy Penetrator Project Campus are located more than 15 km away from Ponmalai.

Unlike these two schools that were started in 1966 and 1986 under the Defence sector, the Kendriya Vidyalaya in Ponmalai is under the civil sector in the district.

In fact, the branch school of KV-1 at Fort Station was the first school in the civil sector. At the time of start in 1966, the branch school functioned in the Hindi Prachar Sabha campus at Thennur. Later, when a move was made to merge it with KV-1, there was resistance from parents. It was then that a decision was taken to retain one section of the primary classes and shift it to the Fort Station premises.

However, the Railway authorities had recommended closure of the school a few years ago as the old buildings had become weak due to higher extent of vibrations caused after conversion of the meter gauge line into broad gauge line.

Much to the relief of the parents, the new KV at Ponmalai was started a year after the Fort School was closed three years back and merged with the KV-1 at Ordnance Factory Estate.
