Rockfort telescope, a hit among visitors

ROCKFORT, an iconic landmark of the city, is buzzing with visitors as people climbing the 417 steps are enjoying an aerial view of the city through a telescope. The telescope was installed at a cost of 1.95 lakh three months ago and has proved to be a huge hit. Close to 40,000 people have enjoyed the scenic view of the city using the telescope.

Tiruchirapalli Rock Fort is revered as a historic fort and temple complex and is built on an ancient 273-foot-high rock. The fort com-plex has witnessed fierce battles between Madurai Nayakas and Bijapur, Camatic and Maratha forces. The 83-meter-high Rockfort Temple comprises shrines of Utchipillaiyar, Thayumana Swamy, and Manikka Vinayagar and attracts dose to 2,500 visitors daily. The numbers rise on auspicious days. The Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowment (HR&CE) De-partment in April installed the telescope atop the hillock, allowing tourists to get a bird's eye view of the fourth most populous city in the State. Speaking to Express, a Rockfort temple management of-ficial said, "Close to 40,000 people have accessed the telescope at the 16-mandapam spot through which Tiruchy International Airport, Gandhi Market, Ponmalai and Tiruchy Railway Junction can be easily seen.
