Ponmalai, a blind spot for Corporation?

HORDES of residents belonging to the ward number 37 of city corporation falling under Ponmalai zone staged a demonstration with empty pots over the Pudukkottai-Tiruchy main road recently alleging that Ponmalai zone of the civic body is apathetic towards the grievances of locals. People of not just ward number 37 but also their neighbours claimed that they had been spending 21,400 per week to meet their domestic water demands as the water supply to their neighborhood is either erratic or substandard in quality. As the four zones of the city corporations   ration namely Srirangam, Ariyamangalam, Ponmalai, and K Abishekapuram have about nearly a lakh metered domestic water connections, due to drought and poor monsoons, the demand for potable water supply has so read to 125 MLD. Even as the Civic body has been catering potable water to locals in ward number 60 and 61 through tanker lorries, residents of ward number 36 and 37 have been seeking the same treatment as the taps of city corporation
fail to provide them water. Speaking to Express, a resident from Ponmalaipatti said, "Since a month, Corporation water which we had been receiving on alternate days was complete-ly stopped. So we are dependent upon on private water carriers by paying 2700 to Z1,400 per week to meet our domestic demands. For people from BPL families, they have no other choice than to commute to far away places to source water." Even as city corporation has claimed that the water projects at an estimated cost of Z3.13 crores have been completed to fulfill the demands of public, Ponmalai zone of city corporation has been facing heat this drought as residents often resort to protests particularly in ward number 36 and 37 condemning the civic body
