More CCTV cameras to monitor the city

WITH the number of people and vehicles in the city on the rise, police have decided to step up vigil by setting up CCTV cameras in new localities. Sastry Road, Karur By-pass Road and Salai Road will all be under the scanner of police officers. The city already has 300 cameras in-stalled at vantage points. According to the police, the proposal to install more cameras was mooted a month ago and the new locations select-ed by senior officers. It had been found traffic at Karur Bypass road, Kohinoor Signal, Salai Road and Sastry Road has shown a marked rise due to the presence of several residential and commercial facilities.

Poles are being set up to mount the cameras and police expect better control of traffic and help in solving crimes. An officer said, "The poles have been installed with two private players involved in the process The two agencies were involved earlier in setting up cameras at Chatiram Bus Stand and Central Bus Stand." Another officer said, "At least 20-25 cameras will be in place across roads that have been ear-marked, which will be done in consultation with the respective inspectors in the localities." Separate control rooms will be set up in police stations to monitor the cameras that will be installed through LED televi-sions Currently, most cameras can be found at Chathiram Bus Stand.
