IndiGo plans services to Chennai, Bengaluru

A FIVE-MEMBER team from In-diGo Airlines carried out a thor-ough assessment of Tiruchy International Airport, following which the carrier is to connect the city to Chennai and Bengaluru. The airline has also expressed interest in flying to various destinations from the city as part of its winter schedule this year: The airport that has witnessed a spurt in the number of international passengers, many of whom face problems with domestic connectivity as only a single private operator connects the city to Chennai. At a time of desperate need for carriers to link Tiruchy to to State capital, IndiGo has stepped up and expressed interest in operating from the airport.

A five-member team from the airline carried out a full audit of Tiruchy International Airport and met with Airport Director K Gtmasekaran. Sources said their inspected the international air-port terminal building, air traffic control, export cargo terminal, Indian Oil Corporation terminal and the traffic management centre. Almost all were checked by IndiGo authorities to ensure facilities were in place for passengers. The team also accessed passenger traffic, the number of airlines operating from here and technical issues. A senior airport official said, "The airline is expected to use new ATR aircraft for operations, similar to Jet Airways. IndiGo will mostly operate on the Tiruchy-Chennai-Bengaluru sector." ATR aircraft can carry 40 to 50 passengers, de-pending on the aircraft type.
