An icon centre will come up at a cost of Rs. 1.50 crore in Tiruchi for safekeeping of bronze statues from remote temples in the surrounding area, Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR&CE) Minister Sevoor S. Ramachandran said on Friday.

He said that the centre would be constructed at the Sri Jambukeswarar Temple in Thiruvanaiakaval utilising the temple’s own funds. Sources in the Department explained that there were a total of 34 bronze icon centres in the State where icons from remote temples without adequate security were kept for safekeeping.

“Each centre would easily contain around 400 icons. This would depend on the size of the icons. Regular pujas are conducted for the idols and taken to the respective temples when they are required,” the official said.

Mr. Ramachandran also announced that Rajagopurams would be constructed for the Sri Chellapandiamman temple in Kangeyampalayam in Coimbatore district and Kandha Perumal Temple in Tirupur district at a total cost of Rs. 1.31 crore.
