Four-member team from Delhi to do a Tiruchy on solid waste management

IT is routine for State government departments to emulate successful schemes in place in the national capital, but it has been the other way around with solid waste management (SWM). Recently, a team of four officials from South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) visited mi-cro compost yard facilities in Tiruchy to look into the possibility of adopting the same infra-structure. SDMC is facing a problem finding space to dispose of domestic waste. Buoyed by the success of the pilot micro compost yard established in Pookollai locality in August 2016, apart from the four existing yards, eight new ones at an estimated cost of Z3.77 crore to produce compost were inau-gurated across the city recently. The campus of micro compost yard of city corporation in Pookkollai vicinity, the Corporation said at least 1.2 lakh people in Tiruchy are now armed with an effective solid waste disposal strategy. Inspired by Tiruchy Corporation in decentralising waste collection and disposal, an SDMC team, including Alok Singh, Di-rector of Horticulture, executive engineers K Kannan and Anil Kumar and Mukhesh Sharma, assistant engineer, toured six micro compost yards and a few biogas plants in the city on Saturday.
Operation and maintenance of the micro compost yard projects were explained to the visitors who asked women from self-help groups about implementation of micro compost yards. "Approximately 10,000 tonne of garbage is being generated by the 104 wards of SDMC every day. We have reached saturation levels as far as dumping routine waste is concerned. Though we have space constraints in implementing micro compost yards, we will look into making changes to emulate Tiruchy in Delhi," Kannan told Express. The SDC team was also shown the process of manufacturing compost from waste, which could be possibly be used to maintaining public parks in SDMC areas. The visiting officials said they came to know about the active functioning of micro compost yards in Tiruchy through media reports.
