Extending a warm welcome

Undergraduate students of Shrimati Indira Gandhi College got a colourful welcome from their seniors with a henna designing event called ‘mehendi kondattam’ on Saturday.

Organised by the Department of Fashion Technology and Costume Designing, the event saw 200 second and third-year students of multiple disciplines decorating the hands of nearly 1500 juniors at the R.V. Auditorium.

“We have been holding ‘mehendi kondattam’ for over 10 years now,” P. Andal, Head, Department of Fashion Technology and Costume Designing, said. “It is a way of encouraging students to mingle freely with one another and do away with the menace of ragging.”

The college authorities provided over 500 cones of henna paste. Enthusiasm among those applying designs and those offering their hands as a canvas was high.

Saraswathi Priya M., a first-year student, said she loved the design that her senior had made on her left hand. “I’m usually not interested in applying mehendi, but when I saw all my classmates, I decided to join them. I love this pattern,” she said as showed her intricate wrist-length pattern.

A. Princy, a third-year student, learnt how to apply henna at the college. “I was welcomed by my seniors with mehendi. Now, I’m happy to get an opportunity to receive juniors in the same manner,” said Princy, who had applied designs on 25 hands since the event began at 9 a.m.
