Bio ethics unit opened at medical college

Related imageA nodal centre of the International Network of UNESCO Chair in Bioethics, Haifa, was inaugurated at the Chennai Medical College Hospital and Research Centre at Irungalur near Tiruchi on Friday.

A three-day training programme on bioethics in health sciences education also got underway along with the opening of the unit. Around 50 health science faculty members from six medical colleges in the country were participating the programme.

The programme aims at training medical teaching faculty to impart bio-ethical knowledge to their students and enable them to emerge as ethically bound health professionals, according a college press release.

The bioethics unit and the training was inaugurated by S. Geethalakshmi, Vice Chancellor, Tamil Nadu Dr. MGR University, in the presence of Russell D’Souza, Head, Asia Pacific Bioethics Division, UNESCO Chair in Bioethics, Haifa, and faculty members of Chennai Medical College Hospital and Research Centre.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Geethalakshmi observed that adopting the principles of bioethics would help bring about transparency in health care and medical research.

“In our pursuit of knowledge, it is important to maintain integrity of human and animal rights as they are fundamental tenets of society,” Dr. Geethalakshmi said in her address.
