Trichy airport design shortlisted for architectural award

The new terminal for Tiruchirappalli (Trichy) International Airport has been announced as a Leading European Architecture Forum (LEAF) Awards finalist in the category of Best Future Building Under Construction Project.

The design, by London architectural practice Pascall+Watson, fuses references from local heritage and culture with a contemporary architectural language to create a sense of place and identity.

The expressive form of the roof and multi-layered façade take inspiration from the geometry, textures and colors of the Tamil Nadu city’s unique traditional temple architecture and the landscape within which it sits.

Climatic constraints, local customs and specific Indian security processes have been considered and are reflected in the aesthetic, planning and structural solutions.

The GRIHA (Green Rating for Integrated Habitat Assessment) 4-star rated design maximizes the use of natural light within the building and incorporates renewable energy measures such as rainwater harvesting, ground source heat pumps and photovoltaic panels.

This year’s winners will be revealed on October 24, at the LEAF annual gala dinner in Berlin, Germany. Also shortlisted in the Best Future Building Under Construction Project are: Moynihan Train Hall in New York, USA; Postkantoor in Rotterdam, Netherlands; and Aqualuna in Toronto, Canada
