In a major step to reduce traffic congestion on Karur Bypass Road, Tiruchi City Corporation has decided to convert the existing Konakarai Road from Woraiyur to Tiruchi-Karur Road in the city into a four-lane stretch.

“We have received a number of representations to develop Konakarai Road in order to divert the traffic on Karur Bypass Road. If Konakarai Road is developed into four-lane, more than 50% of vehicles plying on Karur Bypass Road can be diverted on both ends,” N. Ravichandran, Corporation Commissioner, told reporters here on Tuesday.

He said the length of the road would be 2 km and it would be implemented under the Smart City Mission. A consultant would soon be appointed for preparing the Detailed Project Report.

Similarly, it had been decided to widen Maris Theatre Road for 500 meters. There was a Road Over bridge on it and it belonged to the railways. The road would be widened with the participation of the railways.

Mr. Ravichandran said a proposal had been placed before the high-power committee for building a multi-level car parking (MLCP) facility with daily vegetable market at the existing evening market on Kaliamman Koil Street at a cost ₹10 crore.

The MLCP would have a built up area of 3,001 sq mt. It was designed to accommodate 64 cars and 77 two wheelers. Thirty-two shops would be constructed for vegetable traders. Administrative sanction for appointment of consultant was expected shortly.

The civic body chief said it had been decided to create sports infrastructure in different parts of the city under the Smart City Mission. Construction of a swimming pool and synthetic tennis courts had been proposed in the first phase. Both the swimming pool and tennis courts would come up at Anna Nagar. While land for establishing swimming pool had been identified, a few locations were short listed for tennis courts.

The pool would have total area of 10,746 square meter. Of it, the built up area would be 6647 sq mt. The pool would have a ground plus two floors. While the pool was estimated to cost ₹20.95 crore, the cost of the tennis courts was being worked out.

It had been decided to construct a two-wheeler stand cum commercial floor on Nandhi Koil Street. It could accommodate 53 two-wheelers in the basement. In the second floor, provision would be made for accommodating 63 two-wheelers. As many 134 shops would be constructed. A sum of ₹2.87 crore had been earmarked for the project, he added.
