Tiruchi junction surpasses ₹ 100 crore in originating passenger earnings

Witnessing a slew of developmental works aimed at improving passenger amenities, the Tiruchi railway junction surpassed ₹100 crore in respect of its annual originating passenger earnings during the 2018-19 financial year.

Categorised as ‘A’ station, the Tiruchi junction which is one among the major stations in the Southern Railway zone also saw a jump in the number of passenger movements during the last fiscal.

Railway officials said the originating passenger earnings of Tiruchi junction alone stood at ₹ 109.94 crore during 2018-19 fiscal, registering an increase of 10.36 %. The rise in passenger earnings was to the tune of ₹10.32 crore as compared to 2017-18 financial year.

Located at the central part of the State, Tiruchi junction witnesses heavy volume of passenger traffic especially during night hours when train movements reaches it peak. The officials said the originating number of passengers at Tiruchi junction rose by 13.58 % during the 2018-19 fiscal period - with the figures being 10.85 lakh more than the previous financial year.


The increase in passenger earnings and travellers movements comes at a time when a slew of works are being carried out at the Tiruchi junction under the end-to-end Station Redevelopment Project at a cost of ₹ 27 crore to enhance facilities for the travelling public. This includes construction of the eighth platform at the Kallukuzhi second entry side to reduce waiting time for incoming trains especially during night and also to de-congest the main entrance of the station.

The officials said originating number of passengers and originating earnings in Tiruchi Railway Division increased by 9.79 % and 10.16 % respectively during the 2018-19 fiscal. Freights earnings in the division too recorded an increase which was 37.5 % more than what was achieved during the 2017-18 fiscal.
