The Tiruchi Railway Junction has been sanctioned with two escalators near the foot overbridge connecting the main entrance of the station with the second entry at Kallukuzhi. The facility would come up by December at a cost of ₹ 2.5 crore with funds granted by the Southern Railway.

A senior official said while one escalator would be installed adjoining the foot overbridge at the parcel office side situated at the station’s main entrance, the other would come up near the foot overbridge at the Kallukuzhi second entry. The movement of escalators at both entries would be in up direction.

With funds having been sanctioned and tenders finalised for the project, civil works connected with the project are expected to begin soon. The height of the escalator proposed at the parcel office entry side of the foot overbridge would be 7.15 metre while it would be 6.98 meters at the second entry side, said the official.

The end-to-end steel foot overbridge connecting all the seven platforms and the eighth one under construction was built as an alternative facility for passengers to reach the second entry side from the main entrance and towards the main entrance from the Kallukuzhi side apart from the pedestrian subway which too connects all the platforms.

The first escalator connecting platforms 2 and 3 at the station while proceeding through the pedestrian subway was commissioned in February 2016.

The new facility is to come up at a time when a host of works aimed at improving amenities and ambience of the station were already under way under the station redevelopment project being implemented at a cost of ₹ 27 crore. This includes construction of eighth platform near the Kallukuzhi second entry.
