Trichy International Airport has now been equipped with a brand new Rapid Intervention Vehicle (RIV), an inbuilt firefighting instrument vehicle designed to respond quickly in the event of emergency. Imported from Dubai at a cost of Rs 4.20 crore, the vehicle comes loaded with unique features.
The RIV has been manufactured by NAFFCO, a global leader for manufacturing fire trucks and vehicles in Dubai, and is suitable for combating fire in airports, officials said. This vehicle is the right choice for airport firefighting and rescue purposes. This has been built to meet the requirements of fast intervention in case of emergency, they said.
The cabin is custom-built and tested in accordance with requirements, they added. The vehicle can run at speed of 80 km per 22 seconds, which is nearly 60 km fast than the existing vehicle, said a senior official from the fire and rescue department at the airport.
“The RIV is equipped with two monitors, one on the top and the other in the rear. It will discharge foam mixed with water to the fire, dishing out the entire 6,000 litres of water within 60 seconds. Though the existing fire fighting vehicle has 10,000 litres capacity, the discharging time is a little bit longer,” the official said.
Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting (ARFF) is a special category of firefighting that involves response, hazard mitigation, evacuation and possible rescue of passengers and crew of an aircraft involved in an airport ground emergency. For that , the RIV is a needy one to handle the situation swiftly to take control of the situation during any eventuality at the airport, officials said.
